ShareX

Free Windows screen capture and recorder with auto-upload to 80+ destinations and a configurable share-link workflow. No subscription, no watermark, GPL-3.0.

ShareX is an open source alternative to Loom and Snagit. Free Windows screen capture and recorder with auto-upload to 80+ destinations and a configurable share-link workflow. No subscription, no watermark, GPL-3.0. GPL-3.0 licensed, 38.7k GitHub stars, no terminal required to start, and last released 2026-07-03.

Use it if

Windows users who want a one-tool capture suite: screenshot any region, record screen or GIF, then auto-upload to Imgur, S3, Dropbox, or a custom host and get a share link back, all from a single keystroke.

Skip it if

You are not on Windows. ShareX is a Windows desktop application with no macOS or Linux build. The share-link flow also requires configuring an upload destination: it does not provide a zero-config hosted viewer the way Loom does.

Watch out

A share link requires setting up an upload destination first (Imgur, S3, etc.). Out of the box, ShareX captures locally. GPL-3.0 means derivatives must stay open source. No viewer analytics or comment threads, unlike Loom.

"I used the ShareX screen recorder (https://getsharex.com/) to record each GIF at 30 fps. I believe underneath ShareX is using ffmpeg to do the encoding."

"Sharex. Holy shit, sharex. It's a program that's a combination of a universal file sharer, screenshotter, image editor, screen recorder (which can output gif) and a seriously unbelievable suite of tools like OCR, image combiners, a QR generator, etc."
